Written by Miku and illustrated by Rein Kuwashima, the original I Got a Cheat Skill in Another World and Became Unrivaled in the Real World light novel tells the story of Yuuya Tenjou, a fat, short, and meek teenager who was constantly teased at school and despised by his family, except his grandfather, who was the only one who showed him affection.

After his grandfather passed away, Yuuya’s parents and younger siblings continued to look down on him, despite him inheriting the family home. Eventually, they moved out, leaving Yuuya alone. Inside his grandfather’s house, Yuuya discovered a portal to another world, where he obtained abilities that would permanently change his life.

The light novel was first serialised by Miku on the Kakuyomu website in March 2017 under the tentative title Level Up wa Jinsei o Kaeta. Later, the website was acquired by Japanese publisher Fujimi Shobo, which began to publish the novels with illustrations by Rein Kuwashima in December 2018, under the Fujimi Fantasia Bunko label.

The novel has been adapted into a manga series. Serialised on ASCII Media Works’ Dengeki Playstation Comic Web website since December 2019, the manga is illustrated by Kazuomi Minatogawa. As of December 2025, the manga has collected seven tankoubon volumes.

The novel has also been adapted into an anime series. The adaptation was produced by TMS Entertainment, with animation by Millepensee, and aired from April to June 2023. A 47-minute television anime special was also broadcast on 31 March 2026 by the same studio. A second season was announced on 28 March 2026 at the AnimeJapan event.
